Frequently asked questions

Most frequent questions and answers

Why is low back pain so common?

Statistics compiled by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke assert that lower back pain is the number one cause of job-related disability. It’s also a common experience among adults of all ages.

When you stop to consider the enormous range of tasks your lower back performs every day, and the amount of strain placed on this area of your body, it’s a wonder lower back pain isn’t even more common. Your spine is vulnerable to many different injuries or functional problems.

What are some common causes of lower back pain?

Low back pain can originate from many things. Some of the more common causes include:

  • Traumatic injury
  • Sports injuries
  • Muscle and ligament strain
  • Disc injury
  • Disc degeneration
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Spondylosis
  • Fibromyalgia

This is far from a comprehensive list. There are a multitude of factors that can contribute to or cause lower back pain. Regardless of the cause, there is no need to let lower back pain chart the course of your days and nights when there are safe and effective treatments available.

That process begins with a thorough diagnostic exam and a discussion with Dr. Dunson at Thrive Pain Management about your health history and previous experiences with lower back pain. The practice also uses discography, if needed, to identify which vertebral discs are the likely source of pain.

changes that can boost your overall health and wellness, and, in turn, improve your pain management.

What are some treatments for low back pain?

Lumbar epidural steroid injections are one approach to reducing low back pain. These injections deliver a solution of pain medication and anti-inflammatory medication to the portion of your epidural space where the pain originates.  While not a long-term pain relief solution, lumbar epidural steroid injections can deliver relief that lasts 1-3 months, giving you the chance to pursue physical therapy or other treatments without significant back pain.  Spine facet rhizotomy is another option and works by “turning off” the pain signals that travel between your facet joints and brain. This procedure is done using a local anesthetic and is guided by real-time X-ray imaging to ensure proper needle placement.  Once the treatment needle is next to the targeted nerve, a mild electrical current is delivered. If you’re able to confirm that this is the area where your pain originates, a treatment electrode is heated to destroy that portion of nerve tissue, effectively ending pain signals from that location.  Thrive Pain Management also offers spinal cord stimulation to treat back pain. This approach uses an implanted device to deliver electric currents that disrupt pain signals between body and brain. If you’re curious about these and other lower back pain options, call Thrive Pain Management, or schedule an appointment online to get more information about the diagnostic and treatment opportunities available in-office.
