The Life You Want
Our story
Virtually everyone will experience neck pain at some point or another, but for many men and women, the experience is disruptive or debilitating. Teddrick Dunson, MD, of Thrive Pain Management in Irving, Texas, has the skills and experience needed to determine the cause of your neck pain and craft a customized treatment to deliver lasting relief.
Neck pain can range from mild to severe and can be intermittent or steady. Some of the factors that contribute to neck pain include:
Even something as simple as poor posture or something as seemingly unrelated as stress can cause neck pain.
Most neck pain will resolve over the course of a few days. Self-care efforts like resting your neck, performing gentle stretching and head rolls, and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help.
If your neck pain is severe or does not improve within a few days, consider booking a diagnostic exam at Thrive Pain Management to discover the cause of your neck pain and explore treatment options to relieve the pain.
Epidural injections deliver a combination of corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and an analgesic to reduce pain. The available options include:
Cervical transforaminal epidural steroid injection:
This option relieves pain in the upper back, neck, shoulder, and arm. The injection is positioned near the area where the targeted nerve exits the spine.
Cervical selective nerve root block:
This approach helps diagnose and treat pain in the upper back, neck, shoulder, and arm. It delivers medication directly to specific cervical nerve roots.
Atlanto-axial joint injection:
This injection can diagnose and treat pain in the head and upper neck. It works by delivering pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medication into the atlantoaxial joint, which connects your first and second cervical vertebrae.
Cervical interlaminar epidural steroid injection:
This treatment addresses pain in the neck, shoulder, upper back, and arm. It involves injecting pain medication and an anti-inflammatory into the epidural space, usually from the back of the cervical spine.
Radiofrequency ablation uses radiofrequency energy to interrupt the transmission of pain signals between the medial branch nerve of a facet joint and your brain. Performed in-house at Thrive Pain Management under local anesthetic, Dr. Dunson guides the treatment needle to the suspected source of pain.
If stimulating that nerve provokes muscle twitching, or you report pain, Dr. Dunson knows he is in the right position. He delivers radiofrequency energy to the nerve, stopping its ability to send pain signals. If needed, he repeats the process in other areas.
When neck pain stems from stress or poor posture, the best treatment approach is a course of anti-inflammatory medications while you work on improving your body mechanics and learn how to reduce and manage stress.
