If you’re suffering from lower back or shooting leg pains, Thrive Pain Management offers lumbar epidural steroid injections in our Irving office to help you alleviate your pain. This common outpatient procedure involves a series of three steroid injections spaced anywhere from a week to a month apart for the best results. Similar to a cortisone shot, this type of injection is anti-inflammatory and helps reduce swelling and irritation by calming your spinal nerves. The effects of a lumbar epidural steroid injection are usually felt for about 3-5 days and last about 1-3 months.
HOW LUMBAR EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTIONS WORK
Your spinal cord is protected by three layers: the pia mater, arachnoid and dura mater. Your spinal column is the bony cage surrounding your spinal cord, and your epidural space is the area between that bony cage and your dura mater. This type of injection involves placing the needle in the middle of your back where it can pass through your skin, muscles, spinal column bones and ligaments. Prior to performing the procedure, we’ll clean your back with an antiseptic to reduce the likelihood of an infection and administer a local anesthetic, so you don’t feel the injection. Because your epidural space is rather narrow, this type of injection is administered more by “feel” because we’re unable to view the tip of the needle once it goes all the way in.

Many people fear this type of procedure because they’re afraid it will result in paralysis. While paralysis should not be a real concern, you may experience bleeding, pain, a headache or infection after a steroid injection. Other possible side effects include weight gain, water retention or the suppression of your immune system or your body’s natural steroids. However, you shouldn’t have to go on suffering from lower back or shooting leg pains. Lumbar epidural steroid injections are a safe, effective method of pain management. We would be more than happy to answer any questions and address any concerns you may have for us!
